Changing Places Toilets on the Gold Coast
Getting out and exploring the Gold Coast with your child is one of the best things you can do together. We want to make sure that is as easy and enjoyable as possible for every family.
If your child has complex needs, knowing where to find suitable bathroom facilities before you head out can make all the difference to your day. Changing Places toilets are designed specifically for this, and there are more of them on the Gold Coast than you might think. Here is everything you need to know
What is a Changing Places toilet?
Changing Places toilets are not the same as standard accessible bathrooms. They are specifically designed for people who need more space and specialised equipment to use a bathroom safely and with dignity.
Every Changing Places facility includes:
A height adjustable adult-sized changing bench
A ceiling tracking hoist system
Additional circulation space
A safe and clean environment
For families who rely on hoisting equipment or need extra room to provide personal care, these facilities can make a real difference to what is possible on a day out.
What do I need to access one?
Most Changing Places toilets on the Gold Coast require a Master Locksmith Access Key, known as an MLAK, for entry. This can be purchased through the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia and is worth organising before you need it.
You will also need to bring your own hoist sling, as these are not provided on site. It is worth checking the opening hours of your chosen venue before you head out, as access will depend on when the facility is open.

From our team
We know that getting out into the community with your child is important. It supports their development, their confidence and their sense of belonging in the world around them. We also know that it takes planning, energy and a lot of problem solving.
This guide is one small way we can help make that easier.
We will be sharing more resources like this as part of our family guides series, including beach wheelchair access locations and accessible playground and swing locations on the Gold Coast — coming soon.
If you have any questions or would like to talk about how we can support your child and your family, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are always here.
